I had to do some work to get Unnamed's AI to work with the most recent version of FQM. He also changed some game engine glitches like mines not being properly maintained while in storage or something, the AI doing dumb things near black holes and dying, properly utilizing special ship components like the Religious tech, and he added a whole late-game AI that properly utilizes high Stellar Manipulation tech like star destroyers, warp point opening, even ringworld and Dyson sphere construction! Overall, worth dusting this old game off again and downloading some mods. Before, it kinda just felt like the AI was "just there" to fill in, now it feels like youre playing a decent modern indy empire game. This guy's changes seem to have given the AI a tiny amount of critical thinking ability, such as better judging when and where to build mines and fighters, defending important warp points and planets, correctly deploying minesweepers, handling resources and economy significantly better, and overall providing a much more satisfying meta game. Each AI has a distinctly unique playstyle now, focusing on certain tech areas to align with their racial traits and preferring certain units over others. Fyron's Quadrant Mod adds a lot more depth and variety to the mapgen as well as overhauling textures.īut the best mod has to be Unnamed's AI overhaul, it seems like someone who enjoyed the game very much essentially disassembled all of the AI and rebuilt it from scratch, based on the lessons learned from the years of lore, forum discussions on balance, and the multiplayer experience. The AI was weak even by standards of the day, the textures were meant for 128mb graphics cards, and the universe was beginning to seem more repetitive and dimensionless.īut i started looking into the modding scene for the game and found some gold! The game's files are just sitting there so i updated some textures with higher resolution versions. Over the years i have played many other strategy games and when i came back to SEV recently i noticed it was really starting to show its age. I got it on CD when it came out, and i kept coming back to it over the years as a deep and satisfying galaxy-scale strategy game.
